During the summer of 2011, one of our creative directors, Patrick, started looking for a backpack. He had in mind something that utilized quality materials and an understated design. But he also wanted a bag that could carry everything he needed and stand up to daily wear.

He wanted something beautiful, functional and durable.

Our other creative director, Jacob, joined Patrick in the search. We had both always been drawn to the use and form of vintage military duffle bags. But we wanted something with manageable proportions and elevated design, materials and function.

Nothing we found on the market met our exacting standards.

Over the course of an evening, we went back and forth about the elements we wanted in a backpack. At the end of the night, we realized we had designed a bag.

To execute our design we sought the advice of our close friends in small goods manufacturing in Portland. They introduced us to Pete Williams. Pete has an extensive background in sewing military and expedition spec bags for Mystery Ranch. Pete helped us refine our drawings and create a working sample of our backpack.

We sourced all our materials domestically. We remained committed to using only the highest quality of materials, from the 9-ounce Horween Chromexcel Leather we used for our straps to the heavyweight 18-ounce waxed canvas we used for the body of our bag.

Our leather work is done locally in Portland, Oregon by our friends at Cascadian Fabrications. The bag is sewn and assembled by Last US bags, just across the river in Vancouver, Washington.

The organizational panel on the back of the inside of the bag serves dual functions. First, it has a place for everything, making it easy to locate exactly what you are looking for at any time.  We created a space for your Laptop, iPad, notebooks, pens, phone, keys, wallet, flask, and (of course) hatchet. Second, it shifts the weight of the items right to your back so it feels lighter and is comfortable to wear.

We put the Military Duffle Backpack to the test. It has been to the coast for photo shoots, camping on Mt. Hood, strapped to the back of our bikes, brought to client meetings, and shouldered on weekend trips to Orcas Island, New York City and San Francisco. It goes everywhere with us and looks better for the wear.
